Most Important Requirements for Renting a Vehicle in Chile

This document summarizes the requirements and conditions that car rental companies in Chile commonly request.

Most companies require drivers to be between 21 and 25 years old as the minimum age. This is because the rental agencies’ insurance policies usually have age limits or restrictions. This allows them to be covered in case a customer fails to report damages. If such a situation occurs, the company’s insurance provider may initiate a legal process, which is generally unfavorable for the customer.
Young drivers may be required to pay an additional fee, usually charged on a daily basis, which can significantly increase the total rental cost.

A valid and current driver’s license must be presented. If you are a European citizen and your license does not show an expiration date, do not worry, as rental agencies throughout Chile generally accept it.
Foreign tourists may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) depending on their country of origin and the rental company. This requirement usually applies to tourists from countries such as Russia, Arab countries, China, and France.

A valid Chilean national ID card or passport for foreigners is required. The document must not be expired, as this may result in the termination of your rental agreement at any agency.

A credit card in the name of the main driver or the additional driver is generally required, as only drivers officially listed in the rental agreement are recognized.
In Chile, rental companies usually accept credit cards only, not debit cards. Keep in mind that most Chilean rental agencies require a credit card mainly to hold the security deposit and cover potential damages to the vehicle.

The rental company may place a hold on a certain amount on your credit card during the rental period. If the rental exceeds 30 days, an additional charge may apply, although this depends on the agency.
The deposit amount varies depending on the type of vehicle and the insurance coverage selected.

Reviewing the insurance coverage and deductibles is very important to avoid unexpected additional charges.
You may purchase additional insurance to reduce the amount you would have to pay to the rental company in case of damage. Refund-based insurance offered by companies such as DiscoverCars or Economy Bookings works well, and reimbursement can take as little as 15 days under favorable circumstances.

Carefully read the policies regarding fuel, mileage, traffic fines, and vehicle return conditions.
In Chile, traffic fines are not issued immediately; they follow an administrative process and may be charged up to three months later.
Check the condition of the vehicle before and after the rental period.
Taking photos of the vehicle is essential when renting.
If you experience any problems with the vehicle on the first day, contact the rental agency immediately, as they will likely replace the vehicle.

Compare prices and insurance coverage among different rental companies.
Take photographs of the vehicle when picking it up and when returning it.
Keep a copy of the rental agreement and payment receipts.
Purchasing additional insurance is highly recommended. Without extra coverage, repair costs can be as expensive as buying a new vehicle. Keep this in mind and consider obtaining adequate insurance.
